Best Mahjong Sets for Beginners
The Mahjong Section
In short. Start with the variant: American mahjong uses 152 tiles, eight of them jokers, while a Chinese table plays 144 tiles and no jokers. With nothing yet, one complete American set — the Zinnia at $174.99, with 166 tiles, four racks with magnetic pushers, chips, dice and a wind indicator — leaves only the yearly card to buy. Travel sets are the ones players most often replace, because 30 mm tiles read poorly from across the table.
A good first mahjong set matches the game your group plays and seats four people without a second order. Start with the variant: American mahjong uses 152 tiles, eight of them jokers, while a Chinese table plays 144 tiles and no jokers. Our guide to how many mahjong tiles are in a set breaks down each count. Then check what is in the box and how the tiles read from your chair.
We also cover the budgets new players set and the small surprises that show up after unboxing.

1. A complete American set in one bag
If you are learning American mahjong and own nothing yet, buy everything at once. Racks, pushers, dice and a wind indicator in the same bag mean your first home game needs only the card. Look for numbers in the corners of the suit tiles: they spare you decoding every crak.
American Mahjong Set with Racks - Zinnia
From $174.99
166 white melamine tiles with 10 jokers and numbered bams and craks, 4 racks with magnetic pushers, chips, dice and a wind indicator in a red zip bag.
No set includes the yearly card, which the National Mah Jongg League sells. Our 2027 card page tracks the next edition.
From the table: a first kit with racks, pushers and a bag can be kept near $200, and that budget buys a set you will not outgrow in a season. The one detail worth zooming in on before you order is the 6 and the 9, which some makers print as the same numeral turned upside down.
2. American tiles and a mat for a first home game
Already have racks from a class, or borrow a friend's? This bundle covers what you touch most: a full American count and a mat that keeps the wall quiet.
Mahjong Set with Mat - Turmeric
$132.39
160 American tiles with mustard backs, corner numerals and koi jokers, sold with a navy mat printed with red peonies.
No racks come with it, so test the tiles in the racks you will use. Prefer another surface? See the mat collection.
3. Travel-size American tiles for lessons and visits
Playing mostly at a teacher's or a friend's house? A lighter tiles-only set is easier to carry. Small tiles are harder to read, so insist on corner numbers and lettered winds.
American Mahjong Set 166 Tiles - Bluebell
$172.99
166 white tiles, 1.20 in (30 mm) tall, with corner numbers, lettered winds and red JOKER lettering. Tiles only.
Bluebell tiles are 1.20 in (30 mm) tall, at the compact end of American sizes, so check your rack channel and rack lip first.
From the table: travel sets are the ones players most often replace, because compact tiles are harder to pick up and harder to read from across the table. Shop for size and readability first, and treat the case and the colors as the last decisions rather than the first.
4. A budget Chinese set with racks
If your friends play Chinese or Hong Kong rules, skip the American sets. You need 144 tiles with flowers and seasons, and no jokers. It is also the least expensive set we carry that seats four.
Mahjong Set with Racks - Fennel
$44.99
144 Chinese tiles with lime green backs, four cream racks and two dice.
Without jokers, this set cannot play the hands on the NMJL card. Unsure which game your group plays? Read American and Chinese mahjong: key differences, or see all Chinese mahjong sets.
5. A second complete set for a growing group
One complete set seats four. When your group outgrows one table, a second set in a different bag keeps the two apart at cleanup.
Western Mahjong Set - Poppy
$174.99
166 melamine tiles with 10 jokers, 4 colored racks with magnetic pushers, dice, chips and a wind indicator in a paisley bag.
From the table: hosting for a full table is where the cost of mahjong surprises people, since one set seats four and a regular game needs a second before long. Decide early whether friends chip in or pay a small fee, and start with one good set rather than two average ones.
6. A statement set, once you know your taste
Hand-painted faces and oversized tiles are tempting on day one. Play a season first to learn if you like heavier tiles, larger numbers or a calmer palette, and if your racks take bigger tiles. Then compare our American sets and tiles.
From the table: the mid-range is where most players land after a season on a starter set, with better tiles and no hand painting to pay for. Oversized tiles are the trap in that bracket, so check that your racks still take a 13-tile hand and that you can push a 19-tile wall without straining.
