Everything four players need at the table

Fennel is a full set, not a tile holder on its own: 144 tiles, four cream racks and two dice. Each rack measures 9.45 x 0.79 in (240 x 20 mm) and holds a hand of tiles upright in front of its player, so nobody plays with an open hand.

Lime green backs, bright Chinese faces

The tiles pair lime green backs with white faces marked in blue, red and teal. Each one measures 0.91 x 0.63 in (23 x 16 mm), length by width. The layout is the Chinese one: three suits with Chinese numerals, a bird on the 1 of bamboo, the winds and dragons, and a set of flowers and seasons.

What to look for

keyboard_arrow_down

Three things tell you more about a set than its price.

Weight. Heavier tiles sit steadier on the rack and give the click players listen for when they shuffle. A travel set is lighter and smaller, made to pack rather than to play every week.

Material. Melamine and acrylic give a bright click. Stone, bone and denser composites are duller and heavier in the hand. Neither is better: they suit different tables.

Tile size. From 30 mm upward reads comfortably from the seat opposite. Between 24 and 29 mm suits two players better than four. Below 24 mm is made to pack, not to read at a distance.

You do not need an expensive set to play well. You need one your table can read and you are happy to handle.

The sound alone

Shuffling a real set is half the pleasure. Weight in your hand, that clack across the table: you can hear it before you see it.

Yours for twenty years

A set outlasts the group it started with. Choose one you'll still want on the table when someone else is dealing.

Frequently asked questions

What comes with Fennel?

keyboard_arrow_down

144 tiles with lime green backs, four cream racks and two dice. Fennel is a complete set for four players, not a single tile holder.

Will I need other racks for Fennel tiles?

keyboard_arrow_down

No. Four racks come with the set, and the tiles measure 0.91 x 0.63 in (23 x 16 mm), length by width. That is smaller than a full-size American tile, so keep these tiles with their own racks.

Which mahjong rules does Fennel suit?

keyboard_arrow_down

Chinese rules. Its 144 tiles include suits marked with Chinese numerals, the winds and dragons, and eight bonus tiles. With no jokers in the set, it is not built for an American game card.

How do the Fennel racks work?

keyboard_arrow_down

Each cream rack is 9.45 in (240 mm) long. A player stands a hand of tiles in it with the faces turned inward, so the hand stays upright and hidden from the rest of the table.

Play in Style with The Mahjong Section

A mahjong set is handled more than almost anything else in the house: every tile passes through four pairs of hands, several times a game.

That is what we select for. Tiles that read clearly from the far side of the table, edges that stay clean, and a case that still closes after a few seasons of being carried around.

A Set Worth Collecting

Sets differ in ways that only show at the table: the weight of a tile in the hand, how a crak reads from three seats away, whether the case survives the trip to a friend’s house.

When we have the figures, we publish them: tile count, tile size, weight and material. When we do not have one, we leave it out rather than guess.
