The table comes first

Mahjong isn't really a game about tiles. It's four people around a table, a couple of hours that go faster than they should, and the same four people booking the next one before they leave.

The Mahjong Section sells mahjong sets, tiles, racks, mats, and the small things that make a table work.

Why we're here

The game has been carried from table to table for well over a century, passed between friends, between generations, between countries that each made it their own. It survives for one reason: people keep teaching it to each other.

That's the part we care about. Every set we ship is meant to end up in the middle of a table with four people around it. Connecting players to the game, and to each other, is the point. Selling the equipment is how we get there.

Why we started this

We're a small team who fell for this game and never quite got over it.

What keeps us here isn't the tiles. It's what happens around them: four people who make time for each other every week, a beginner who stops apologizing somewhere around her third session, a group that has been meeting for years and shows no sign of stopping.

We built The Mahjong Section to make that easier to start and cheaper to keep going. If we're doing this right, there are more tables next year than there were this year. That's the whole ambition.

What we believe

A tile is an object you touch a thousand times. Weight, finish, and how a crak reads from the far side of the table matter more than how the set photographs. When we have the numbers, we publish them. When we don't have one, we leave it out rather than guess.

American mah jongg is its own tradition. Not a newer version of the older game: a separate line, shaped in the United States from 1920 onward, with its own annual card since 1937. Both are still played, and neither replaced the other.

You don't need an expensive set to play well. A set your table can read, with every tile it should have, is enough. We'd rather sell you the right set than the biggest one.

A game night is worth setting up for. The mat you like, the racks that sit flat, the light that lets everyone read their hand.
