Where it comes from

Two traditions, not one game

Mahjong was first played around 1870, in the region between Ningbo and Shanghai. It reached the United States in 1920, when Joseph P. Babcock brought it back and standardised a set of rules for American players. He did not invent it. He made it travel. What grew from that is a second tradition, not a replacement.

1870 Ningbo – Shanghai

Chinese Roughly a hundred and fifty years old. Old enough to have travelled a long way, young enough that we know where it started.

1937 New York

American The League was founded by Jewish-American women; its card has governed play ever since. Jokers arrived in the 1960s.

The American game also owes its shape to Chinese-American players and to the Air Force wives who spread the Wright-Patterson variant. Both games are still played, side by side. We stock sets for both, and we do not sell either one as an improvement on the other.
