Lavender backs, garden faces

Turn a Lilac tile over and the back is lavender, with thin pink and green layers along the edge. The faces stay white, so the pink and mauve flower dots, the green lattice bams with a bird on the 1 and the pink craks keep their contrast. The Jokers show a flowering shrub in a blue and white pot, and the winds sit on ginger jars marked N, E, W and S.

A number on every suit tile

Each dot, bam and crak carries its number in the corner. Someone still learning the faces can sort a hand by number, and the rest of the table spots a discard without leaning in.

What to look for

keyboard_arrow_down

Three things tell you more about a set than its price.

Weight. Heavier tiles sit steadier on the rack and give the click players listen for when they shuffle. A travel set is lighter and smaller, made to pack rather than to play every week.

Material. Melamine and acrylic give a bright click. Stone, bone and denser composites are duller and heavier in the hand. Neither is better: they suit different tables.

Tile size. From 30 mm upward reads comfortably from the seat opposite. Between 24 and 29 mm suits two players better than four. Below 24 mm is made to pack, not to read at a distance.

You do not need an expensive set to play well. You need one your table can read and you are happy to handle.

Read at a glance

Nobody wants to squint at their own hand. Faces that carry across the table, so the game moves and nobody has to ask.

Weight you'll notice

The difference between a tile you tolerate and a tile you reach for is in your fingers. Heavier tiles shuffle better and stack straighter.

Frequently asked questions

What comes with Lilac?

keyboard_arrow_down

160 acrylic American mahjong tiles and a storage bag. Racks, scoring sticks and the game card are not part of the order.

Does Lilac include Jokers and blanks?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. The 160 tiles include 10 Jokers and 6 blanks, next to 108 suit tiles, 16 winds, 12 dragons and 8 flowers.

Are the Lilac tiles easy to read?

keyboard_arrow_down

Yes. Every suit tile shows its number in the corner and the ginger jar winds carry the letters N, E, W and S, so you can place a tile without studying the flowers.

Are the Lilac tiles lavender all over?

keyboard_arrow_down

No. The faces are white and the backs are lavender, with pink and green layers on the edge. The lavender shows on the wall and when the tiles lie face down.

Play in Style with The Mahjong Section

A mahjong set is handled more than almost anything else in the house: every tile passes through four pairs of hands, several times a game.

That is what we select for. Tiles that read clearly from the far side of the table, edges that stay clean, and a case that still closes after a few seasons of being carried around.

A Set Worth Collecting

Sets differ in ways that only show at the table: the weight of a tile in the hand, how a crak reads from three seats away, whether the case survives the trip to a friend’s house.

When we have the figures, we publish them: tile count, tile size, weight and material. When we do not have one, we leave it out rather than guess.
