    The Mahjong Section

In short. Most groups play on a folding card table, a larger top, or a floating board once summer comes. Racks run from about 17 to 20 inches, and a mat should lie flat without hanging over the edge — 31.5 inches on a 34-inch table, 35.4 on a 38-inch one. A card table top must stay flat at the hinge, because a ridge under the wall tips tiles. In the pool, the Palm set uses 148 waterproof cards instead of good tiles.

A mahjong table has to hold four racks, a square wall in the middle, a card at every seat and somewhere to put a glass. Most groups play on one of three things: a folding card table, a larger square or round top at home, or a floating board in the pool once summer comes. Whatever you choose, measure first. Racks run from about 17 to 20 inches long, and a mat should lie flat without hanging over the edge.

We also cover the tables that hold up for weekly play, the ones players outgrow and how a game works by the water.

    1. A folding card table for most homes

Folding card tables are the default because they are cheap, light and gone into a closet after game night. Before you buy, open one and run a hand across the middle: the top should stay flat at the hinge, since a ridge under the wall makes tiles tip. Lock the legs and lean on a corner to check for wobble. Card tables usually measure 32 to 38 inches square.

A mat hides the hinge line and quiets the tiles. Choose one a little smaller than the top so it lies flat: 31.5 inches on a 34-inch table, 35.4 inches on a 38-inch one.

From the table: a protection plan is worth pricing in with a new folding table, since the top is what stops lying smooth at the hinge first. Repainting an old folding table is the other route: a 32-inch pair done green, with a de-glosser first and a light sanding between three coats, gives a mahjong table for the price of paint.

    2. A larger top when racks and cards crowd you

American mahjong fills a table fast. Each player has a rack, exposures laid out in front of it, a card and often a drink, while the discards gather in the center. If your elbows meet your neighbor's, a top of 36 to 40 inches, square or round, gives each seat more room without pushing the wall out of reach.

Rack length sets the minimum. Four 20-inch racks need more table than four 17-inch ones, so on a small top, shorter racks win back a few inches at each corner.

Other lengths, from 17 to 20 inches, are in our rack collection.

From the table: a 34-inch square table fills up fast once the card, a drink and four racks are on it, and racks laid on a printed mat cover the rules. A light 38-inch or larger top, square or round, gives each seat room and still fits in a wagon; a 35-inch table is worth measuring against your racks and pushers before you commit.

    3. A tabletop board for travel and small spaces

Some tables travel in a bag. A tabletop board turns a desk, a hotel room or a picnic blanket into a playing surface, and a raised portable top can sit on any furniture. Before buying a raised one, check how much flat space surrounds it, because exposures and discards still need a place to go.

Our smallest option is a set whose case becomes the table. It plays Chinese mahjong with mini tiles and has no jokers, so it suits travel and practice rather than an American group.

For a full-size American game away from home, a rolled mat does the same job on whatever table you find.

From the table: on a portable table about 6 inches tall, the raised surface leaves almost no room for exposures and discards once four racks are on it. Before buying a raised top, check the flat space around it, because an American game still needs somewhere to lay melds and build the wall.

    4. A floating table for the pool

A floating mahjong table is a buoyant board that holds the game at water level, with players standing around it in the shallow end. Before buying one, look at three points: how it folds for storage, how it keeps tiles in place when the water moves, and whether your tiles can take chlorine or salt. Our aqua mahjong guide covers boards, anchoring and tile materials.

If you would rather keep your good tiles dry, a card version removes the risk. Palm's clear PVC cards wipe off after a splash and can be washed after an afternoon of sunscreen.

From the table: a floating table that folds in half stores easily, and two stabilizers on the back go in within 30 seconds, which is what keeps the board steady while the water moves. Pool play works two ways: in the shallow end on floating mats, or poolside for anyone who would rather stay dry, with a plan to move indoors when rain threatens.

    5. Water-safe pieces for a table by the pool

Not everyone wants to stand in the water. A table on the deck only has to survive wet hands and the odd splash. Keep paper cards and the NMJL card in a zip bag, set drinks on a separate surface, and dry tiles before they go back in the case.

A waterproof deck is the simplest way to play by the water without worrying about your set. Like Palm, it follows the Chinese game, so it cannot play the hands on the NMJL card.

From the table: saltwater decides the tile question, because chlorine and salt both work on backs and faces over a season, so waterproof, UV-resistant or floating pieces are not an upsell for pool play. If the same set has to double as a light travel set, weigh it and check the case before you decide.
