Wooden Mahjong Tiles - Madder

Madder is a set of 144 wooden mahjong tiles in dark red hardwood, engraved in green, red and gold and stored in a handled case with an orange lining.

  • Dark red hardwood tiles with green, red and gold markings
  • All 144 tiles plus 2 blank spares, flowers and seasons included
  • Handled case with an orange lining and a channel for the dice

Is it right for you?

Madder brings the dark grain of hardwood to the table, for players who prefer the warmth of wood to the gloss of melamine.

Prefer a lighter, golden wood? Gamboge uses golden silk nanmu tiles with a wavy grain, in a brocade case.

Dark wood, bright markings

Madder tiles are hardwood with a deep red-brown grain. The engraved markings are filled in green, red and gold: green winds, red characters and a gold frame on the white dragon. The flower and season tiles show small blossoms in the same three colors.

Four wood tones, one handled case

Choose golden, deep red, red-brown or dark brown tiles. Every version holds 144 tiles and 2 blank spares, and comes in a handled case with an embossed silver-tone exterior; inside, an orange lining surrounds two tile compartments and a slot for the dice.

What to look for

keyboard_arrow_down

Three things tell you more about a set than its price.

Weight. Heavier tiles sit steadier on the rack and give the click players listen for when they shuffle. A travel set is lighter and smaller, made to pack rather than to play every week.

Material. Melamine and acrylic give a bright click. Stone, bone and denser composites are duller and heavier in the hand. Neither is better: they suit different tables.

Tile size. From 30 mm upward reads comfortably from the seat opposite. Between 24 and 29 mm suits two players better than four. Below 24 mm is made to pack, not to read at a distance.

You do not need an expensive set to play well. You need one your table can read and you are happy to handle.

The sound alone

Shuffling a real set is half the pleasure. Weight in your hand, that clack across the table: you can hear it before you see it.

Frequently asked questions

What comes with Madder?

keyboard_arrow_down

Madder ships with 144 wooden Chinese mahjong tiles, 2 blank spares and dice, inside a handled case with an embossed silver-tone exterior and an orange-lined interior.

What are the Madder tiles made of?

keyboard_arrow_down

Madder tiles are hardwood. Choose the tone you prefer: golden, deep red, red-brown or dark brown. Each version shows the wood grain under the engraved markings.

Is Madder a Chinese or an American set?

keyboard_arrow_down

Madder is made for Chinese play: 144 tiles including flowers and seasons, Chinese characters on the suits and no corner numbers. Without jokers, it cannot stand in for an American set.

Which Madder tone matches the photos?

keyboard_arrow_down

The photos show the deep red version, with green, red and gold markings on dark red wood. The golden version is honey-colored, and the dark brown version is the darkest of the four.

Play in Style with The Mahjong Section

A mahjong set is handled more than almost anything else in the house: every tile passes through four pairs of hands, several times a game.

That is what we select for. Tiles that read clearly from the far side of the table, edges that stay clean, and a case that still closes after a few seasons of being carried around.

A Set Worth Collecting

Sets differ in ways that only show at the table: the weight of a tile in the hand, how a crak reads from three seats away, whether the case survives the trip to a friend’s house.

When we have the figures, we publish them: tile count, tile size, weight and material. When we do not have one, we leave it out rather than guess.
