Golden grain under every face
Gamboge is made from golden silk nanmu, a solid wood with a shimmering, wave-like grain. Its red, green and black markings are engraved and color-filled, so they read clearly on the golden surface. The flowers and seasons show red blossoms under their Chinese names.
A brocade case for the whole game
The tiles travel in a black and gold brocade case with a handle and latches. Inside, an orange lining and a center channel keep the dice and the blank spare tiles between two compartments of tiles. The full Chinese layout is there, flowers and seasons included.

Play tonight
Tiles, and everything the case holds, in one box. Unwrap it, deal a hand, and your table is running.
The sound alone
Shuffling a real set is half the pleasure. Weight in your hand, that clack across the table: you can hear it before you see it.
Yours for twenty years
A set outlasts the group it started with. Choose one you'll still want on the table when someone else is dealing.
Frequently asked questions
What comes with Gamboge?
keyboard_arrow_down
The full set of wooden Chinese mahjong tiles with flowers and seasons, dice and blank spare tiles, stored in a black and gold brocade case with a handle and an orange lining.
Are the Gamboge tiles real wood?
keyboard_arrow_down
Yes. The tiles are made from golden silk nanmu, a solid wood with a golden, wave-like grain. Each tile shows its own grain pattern under the engraved markings.
Is Gamboge a Chinese or an American set?
keyboard_arrow_down
Gamboge follows the Chinese game, with character suits, winds, dragons and eight flowers and seasons. It has no jokers, so it does not replace an American set.
How do the three Gamboge versions differ?
keyboard_arrow_down
Two versions show bright golden tiles with a wavy grain. The honey brown version has a deeper, browner wood tone. All three come in the same style of brocade case.
Play in Style with The Mahjong Section
A mahjong set is handled more than almost anything else in the house: every tile passes through four pairs of hands, several times a game.
That is what we select for. Tiles that read clearly from the far side of the table, edges that stay clean, and a case that still closes after a few seasons of being carried around.
A Set Worth Collecting
Sets differ in ways that only show at the table: the weight of a tile in the hand, how a crak reads from three seats away, whether the case survives the trip to a friend’s house.
When we have the figures, we publish them: tile count, tile size, weight and material. When we do not have one, we leave it out rather than guess.
