Deep red agate, white characters
Cinnabar tiles are agate in a deep, glassy red, with the characters, dots and bamboo engraved and filled in white. The red shifts in tone across the set, from bright to dark. The same tiles also come in pale white, clear and smoky grey agate.
A thick tile and a 136-tile layout
Each tile measures 1.42 x 1.10 x 0.71 in (36 x 28 x 18 mm), thick and solid in the hand. The standard set has 136 tiles: the Chinese layout without flowers and seasons. Pick the deep red version with flower tiles to play with the full 144.

Play tonight
Tiles, and everything the case holds, in one box. Unwrap it, deal a hand, and your table is running.
The sound alone
Shuffling a real set is half the pleasure. Weight in your hand, that clack across the table: you can hear it before you see it.
Yours for twenty years
A set outlasts the group it started with. Choose one you'll still want on the table when someone else is dealing.
Frequently asked questions
How many tiles come with Cinnabar?
keyboard_arrow_down
The standard set has 136 tiles, the Chinese game without flowers and seasons, plus 2 spare tiles. The deep red version with flower tiles adds 8 flowers for a full 144.
How big are the Cinnabar tiles?
keyboard_arrow_down
Each tile measures 1.42 x 1.10 x 0.71 in (36 x 28 x 18 mm). They are tall and thick, so check the channel and depth of your racks before pairing them.
Is Cinnabar a Chinese or an American set?
keyboard_arrow_down
Chinese. The 136-tile layout, or 144 with flowers, uses Chinese characters on the suits and holds no jokers, so Cinnabar will not cover an American game.
Which colors does Cinnabar come in?
keyboard_arrow_down
Red, pale white, clear and smoky grey agate, each with 136 tiles. The deep red version adds 8 flower tiles for a set of 144.
Play in Style with The Mahjong Section
A mahjong set is handled more than almost anything else in the house: every tile passes through four pairs of hands, several times a game.
That is what we select for. Tiles that read clearly from the far side of the table, edges that stay clean, and a case that still closes after a few seasons of being carried around.
A Set Worth Collecting
Sets differ in ways that only show at the table: the weight of a tile in the hand, how a crak reads from three seats away, whether the case survives the trip to a friend’s house.
When we have the figures, we publish them: tile count, tile size, weight and material. When we do not have one, we leave it out rather than guess.
