If you want olive green mahjong tiles, Olivine puts the color where you see it most: on the back of every tile. The backs are a solid, glossy olive green with no printed pattern, and the faces are white with rounded corners. Turn a tile on its side and you see four bands of color, from the white face through terracotta and cream to the olive back. A face-down wall reads as a clean green row with a warm stripe running along its edge.
This is an American Mahjong set, with an Arabic numeral in the top corner of every dot, bam and crak, plus flowers and jokers. The 160 tiles break down like this:
That is the 152 tiles a standard American game uses, plus two extra jokers and six blanks. Many groups keep the blanks aside as spares for a lost tile.
The dots are drawn as concentric rings with blue numerals. The bams are green bamboo stalks with green numerals, and the 1-Bam is a peacock with a blue-green tail. The craks sit inside ornamental lantern frames with rose numerals. The dragons follow a lion dance theme: a pink-red lion dances with the craks, a green lion with the bams, and a teal-roofed pavilion gate stands in as the soap. The eight flowers are eight different lotus blossoms, four in blue and teal and four in pink and red, and they are not numbered. All 10 jokers share one design, a woman in a conical hat and pink top, with JOKER written in teal. The winds are large serif letters, each topped with a small colored arrow.
The maker lists the tiles at approximately 1.26 x 0.95 x 0.63 in (32 x 24 x 16 mm) and notes that hand measurements can vary, so treat those figures as a guide rather than a rack fit. The tiles are listed as acrylic. Acrylic tiles usually need nothing more than a soft, slightly damp cloth; skip solvents and keep the set out of strong sun for long stretches.

Read at a glance
Nobody wants to squint at their own hand. Faces that carry across the table, so the game moves and nobody has to ask.
Weight you'll notice
The difference between a tile you tolerate and a tile you reach for is in your fingers. Heavier tiles shuffle better and stack straighter.
Match your mat
Tiles set the palette for everything else on the table. Pick the ones you want to build around.
You get 160 tiles: 36 dots, 36 bams, 36 craks, 16 winds, 12 dragons, 8 flowers, 10 jokers and 6 blanks. That is everything the listing covers. No case, bag, racks, dice, pushers or rules card are listed as included, so plan to pair the tiles with your own racks and storage. The annual National Mah Jongg League card is not listed either; players buy it from the League each year.
A standard American Mahjong game uses 152 tiles, including 8 jokers. Olivine has those 152 tiles plus two more jokers and six blanks, for 160 in total. The extra jokers give you a spare if one goes missing, and many groups keep blanks aside as replacements or use them for house rules. If your group plays strictly with 152, simply set the two extra jokers and the blanks aside before you deal.
The green tile most people ask about is the green dragon, one of the three dragons in every set. In American Mahjong the green dragon is matched with the bams, the red dragon with the craks and the white dragon, often called soap, with the dots. On Olivine the green dragon is drawn as a green lion from a lion dance, the red dragon as a pink-red lion, and the soap as a teal-roofed pavilion gate.
The backs are solid olive green with a glossy finish, and the faces are white. From the side, each tile shows four layers: white, terracotta, cream and olive green. Olive is a color that shifts with light and screens, and the maker notes that color can look slightly different from one display to another. Expect a muted, earthy green rather than a bright or jade green.
A mahjong set is handled more than almost anything else in the house: every tile passes through four pairs of hands, several times a game.
That is what we select for. Tiles that read clearly from the far side of the table, edges that stay clean, and a case that still closes after a few seasons of being carried around.
Sets differ in ways that only show at the table: the weight of a tile in the hand, how a crak reads from three seats away, whether the case survives the trip to a friend’s house.
When we have the figures, we publish them: tile count, tile size, weight and material. When we do not have one, we leave it out rather than guess.
