Indigo swaps the usual ivory face for glossy black. Characters, dots and bamboo glow in turquoise and white, with soft pink accents on some bamboo and dot tiles. The flowers and seasons trade the old paintings for simple icons, such as a plum blossom, a raindrop or a snowflake, each tagged with a small Chinese character.

The tiles come in the 40 mm size, the standard full size for Chinese sets, neither travel-small nor oversized. All 144 tiles and the 4 dice arrive in a black cube box printed with pink flowers and a teal band, with an inner tray inside.

Weight. Heavier tiles sit steadier on the rack and give the click players listen for when they shuffle. A travel set is lighter and smaller, made to pack rather than to play every week.

Material. Melamine and acrylic give a bright click. Stone, bone and denser composites are duller and heavier in the hand. Neither is better: they suit different tables.

Tile size. From 30 mm upward reads comfortably from the seat opposite. Between 24 and 29 mm suits two players better than four. Below 24 mm is made to pack, not to read at a distance.
