Types of Mahjong: Choose the Right Variant
A Mahjong set should be chosen for the game—not the color. American Mahjong, Chinese variants and Japanese Riichi share familiar tile families but differ in rules, equipment and scoring.
Start with your group
Ask the host or teacher which rules they follow. The word “Chinese Mahjong” covers several regional styles, so ask for the specific variant rather than assuming one universal inventory.
American Mahjong
Check that the product listing explicitly supports American play. Review the tile inventory, including jokers, flowers and any extras. Many groups use racks and pushers, but confirm whether they are included. The current National Mah Jongg League card is obtained separately from the League. The Mahjong Section is not affiliated with or endorsed by the League.
Chinese variants
Ask which rules and tile composition the group uses. Check whether flowers, seasons and other optional tiles are needed. Do not assume that a Chinese set is interchangeable with an American one.
Japanese Riichi
Confirm the set supports Riichi conventions and includes the appropriate components for your group. Scoring materials and tile markings can differ from other Mahjong styles.

- Which exact ruleset will be played?
- What is the required tile inventory?
- Are jokers, flowers or other extras used?
- Are racks, pushers or scoring materials required?
