American Mahjong Practice Plan for Tournament Readiness

American Mahjong Practice Plan for Tournament Readiness

Tournament preparation is less about playing every hand quickly and more about becoming comfortable with the event's format. Confirm the organizer's rules first: timing, scoring, rounds, equipment and card edition can differ.

A 75-minute practice session

Minutes 0–10: Review the format. Read the organizer's instructions together. Agree on which procedures you are practicing and who will answer rules questions. Never treat home customs as official tournament rules.

Minutes 10–20: Set up deliberately. Arrange the equipment the event permits or provides. Practice making room for cards, scores and discards. If the organizer supplies tiles and racks, you may not need to bring your own.

Minutes 20–60: Play with clear calls. Focus on audible tile names, orderly exposures and a steady pace. Do not rush merely to hit an arbitrary time target. If a question arises, note it and follow the official procedure where the event requires an immediate ruling.

Minutes 60–70: Review uncertainties. Check the current official rules and event-specific instructions. Record unanswered questions to send to the organizer.

Minutes 70–75: Reflect. Each player names one thing that felt easier and one thing to practice next time.

Seven questions for the organizer

  1. Which Mahjong variant and annual card edition apply?
  2. What is the round schedule and check-in time?
  3. How are scoring and ties handled?
  4. What equipment is supplied?
  5. What may players bring, including notes and phones?
  6. How are seats or tables rotated?
  7. What is the procedure for disputes or unclear rulings?

Practice habits worth keeping

Make calls clearly; listen when others call; avoid coaching someone else's hand during active play; organize tiles without disrupting the table; ask questions respectfully. A friendly home game can rehearse courtesy as well as rules.

What not to buy yet

Do not assume you need a tournament-specific set, mat, bag or rack. Confirm what the event provides. If you must transport equipment, check actual packed dimensions and weight before choosing storage.
