Shuffling is the part of mahjong nobody misses. Between every hand, 4 people push tiles face down, mix them, and build 4 walls of the right length. It takes 2 or 3 minutes, it happens 20 times an evening, and it is the reason a session that was meant to last 2 hours lasts 4.
An automatic table does that work underneath. Tiles drop through the centre, get sorted, and come back up as a finished wall while the previous hand is still being scored. The game stops being punctuated by admin.
Most automatic tables are furniture. They weigh 60 kilos, they arrive on a pallet, and once installed they define the room. This one folds: the legs collapse and the table stands upright against a wall or slides into a closet.
That is the difference between a table a household actually buys and one it thinks about. A dining room that hosts mahjong twice a month cannot give up its floor permanently, and a group that meets at a different house each week needs equipment that travels.
The mechanism takes American tiles and Chinese tiles. American sets run 166 tiles at around 30 mm; Chinese sets run 144 at 40 mm. A table cut for one usually jams on the other, which is why groups that play both often keep 2 sets and one very patient host.
Tiles are not included, and this matters more than it sounds. Automatic tables read tile size and magnetism, so a set bought separately has to match. If you already own tiles, measure their height before ordering. If you do not, buy the tiles and the table together and keep them as a pair.
The table needs a mains socket within reach of the cable, and it needs the floor to be level. On a rug, the wall build can drift.

Most of the cost sits in the mechanism rather than the surface. An automatic table sorts tiles, turns them face down and lifts a finished wall, which means motors, sensors and a frame rigid enough to keep them aligned over years of use. There is no single answer, only a match to how often you play. A group that meets weekly and has started resenting the shuffle is served by an automatic table; one that plays 3 times a year is better off with a mat and a good set.
