There is a practical argument buried in the word modern, and it has nothing to do with taste. Equipment that lives in a cupboard waits for an occasion. Equipment that sits out gets used on a Tuesday because it is there.
A warm yellow acrylic set reads as an object on a side table rather than as a boxed game, and households that leave it out end up playing more. That is the whole case for a coloured set, and it is a better one than aesthetics alone.

Whichever one you leave out. A set kept in a cupboard is judged once a month in the two seconds before play starts; a set that lives on a side table is part of the room. That is the argument for a warm colour over a technical one. Yellow acrylic reads as an object rather than as equipment, which is a different test from how a tile photographs on white.
It depends entirely on material, age and whether the count is intact, and any figure quoted without seeing the set is guesswork. Pre war bone and bamboo in original cases carry real value; mid century plastic mostly does not. If you are choosing between a vintage set and a modern one to actually play with, weigh the risk of a missing tile against the appeal.
It names the tiles that finish a partial run. Two and three are completed by a one or a four, five and six by a four or a seven, and the pattern climbs the suit in the same shape. Players lean on it to judge a wait without laying the hand out. It applies to the numbered suits only, since winds and dragons form no sequences.
Because the product is uniformity across a large number of pieces, and uniformity is what costs. A tile that comes out a shade off is not sold cheaply, it is scrapped with the set it belonged to.
