A box big enough for a mahjong set is easy to find. A box that keeps a set organised is not, and the difference shows up every time the game comes out.
In a single compartment box, the dice sink to the bottom under 144 tiles, the wind indicator is never where it was left, and everything has to be tipped out to find anything. Compartments end that.
The second argument, and the one nobody thinks about until the corners have already gone. Loose tiles in a box being carried grind against each other with every step. Over a few years that rounds the corners and dulls the faces.
Tiles held in rows do not move against each other, and a set stored that way looks materially better after a decade than one that has rattled.
A portable box needs a lid that stays shut. It sounds obvious and it is the thing that most often fails: a lid held by friction alone opens in a bag, and 144 tiles in the bottom of a tote is a bad afternoon.
Check the closure when it arrives, before the first trip rather than during it.
Wipe clean. Let it dry fully if anything is spilled inside, since a closed plastic box holds damp against the tiles.

Dry, out of sunlight, and packed so nothing shifts. Tiles that travel loose grind against each other and chip at the corners, which is how sets die: not in one accident but over fifty journeys. Compartments solve the second half of the problem, which is that dice, wind markers and spare tiles migrate under the tiles and are then declared lost.
The traditional Chinese set is 144 tiles and the good ones differ by size and finish rather than by anything a brand name would tell you. Bigger tiles read better on a table left set up; smaller ones pack. Whatever the set, the compartmented box is usually an upgrade on what it arrived in, because makers spend on tiles and economise on packaging.
For anything genuinely old, get it appraised rather than estimated online, since condition and completeness swing the figure enormously. As a rule, value sits in pre war bone and bamboo, in full counts, and in original cases. For a modern set the useful question is different: what it costs to protect. Storage costs a fraction of a set and decides how much of that set survives.
Anywhere from very little to a great deal, which is an unsatisfying answer but a true one. Vintage covers everything from mid century plastic to pre war bone, and those are different markets. The reliable signals are the material, whether the count is complete, and whether the original case survives. Buy on those rather than on the word vintage, which is doing no work at all.
